Wine Grape Variety For Small Nw Back Yard

Hello, we're just getting started...pulled complete back yard lawn out, planted a cover crop of crimson clover to winter over; would like to plant vine in Spring that perhaps after 5 years could provide us w/ some simple red table wine; we're just outside of Portland, OR. could you recommend vine type to purchase for this area? or a nursery to purchase from? Thanks so much for even 1 step in this research process!
Answer From Expert Roger Bohmrich MW

Here are some suggestions that I hope will be helpful. You may first want to contact Oregon State University (oregonstate.edu) to see if you can get some initial academic guidance before you make any other decisions. You should be able to obtain good advice as to suitable vines and all the other important elements associated with establishing and tending your home vineyard. You can also consult the Northwest Berry and Grape Information Network (berrygrape.org) and the commercial nursery section of the University of California-Davis (ucdavis.edu). Good luck with your project!
