Is Moscato better then Chardonnay or is Chardonnay better than Moscato
Answer From Expert Roger Bohmrich MW
This is a question that can be answered on two levels. First, deciding when it comes to wine and other matters of taste what is "better" is personal and subjective. No one can dictate to you what you prefer, and in fact you might like examples of both types equally, or one more than the other on any given day. As for what "experts" might argue, it's probably fair to say that Chardonnay is capable of producing wines considered great and even age-worthy as well as basics which are simply good and drinkable. Prices for Chardonnay range from very low to very expensive, reflecting widely varying qualities. Moscato, in the popular style, can be delicious and obviously appeals to many palates with its grapey, sweet personality - unlike the typical Chardonnay, which is dry and far less aromatic. Moscato is Italian for Muscat, a grape which can in fact produce many styles offering more dimension of flavor; most are sweet, some are dry. The fortified Muscats made in France, Italy or Greece can be wonderful. In the end, questions such as yours can only be answered by each of us after tasting many examples, just to be sure we've covered all the possibilities.
