Twomey 2000 Merlot

We have a bottle of Merlot from Twomey Cellars that we purchased at the winery in Oakville in 2005. We are planning to open this bottle maybe this year. Any advice on how long this wine can be kept? Since our purchase it has been stored in a wine cooler on it's side.
Answer From Expert Roger Bohmrich MW

The good news is that you've apparently stored the wine in ideal conditions, which prolongs the life of nearly any wine. I haven't tasted the 2000 Twomey Merlot, but a remark on the winery's site may be a clue: they say that their aim is to craft wines which are "deliciously drinkable upon release." With that in mind, and given my personal preference to drink sooner rather than later whenever there is a question, I would suggest you stay with your plan to open the bottle this year.
