Thanksgiving Wine

What wine do you serve for Thanksgiving?
Answer From Expert Roger Bohmrich MW

I hope I'm in time to give you some practical advice! This is the most popular question for any retailer in the days before Thanksgiving, and the answer is surprisingly more evident than it might seem. In fact, many wines of many colors and styles will pair successfully with the Thanksgiving meal - or certainly the "traditional" one based on turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes and so forth. While many people think there must be a "perfect" wine choice, the fact that this holiday meal involves so many tastes - including sweet ones - means there are many possible wine partners. In reds, you can go the classic route with a good Bordeaux or equivalent blend, which matches the turkey itself. Or, a ripe Pinot Noir can often handle the range of tastes, and some people like Zinfandel for its warmth and spicy berry fruit. Richer whites such as Viognier or Chardonnay are possibilities, and ripe, off-dry Riesling is not out of the question. As for the pumpkin or apple pie, try a mature Sauternes, Tokaji, Tawny Port, or Liqueur Muscat from Australia.
