Stonehill Winery

Isn't Stonehill Winery from 1847 the oldest winery? It has an excellent Norton/Cynthianna. Carole Clancy Javaux
Answer From Expert Roger Bohmrich MW

I gather your question arises in connection with another answer I wrote about the Ten Broeck Mansion in Albany, New York. That question focused on the oldest private cellar rather than on commercial wineries. Since I wrote my reply to that question, I learned that the cellar at Ten Broeck was actually walled up for many decades and was not reopened until 1977. In other words, it was not in continuous use since it was first established. When it comes to wineries still active today, Stone Hill, founded in 1847, is one of the oldest and is particularly famous for their excellent Norton. However, the winery did not produce wine for a period during Prohibition, when the cellars were used to grow mushrooms. It seems that the Brotherhood Winery in Washingtonville, New York is the oldest winery operating today in the USA, and it dates from 1839. I welcome any information from readers of this forum which would provide further details about this interesting topic.
