Rioja

I was wondering, Rioja is the region in spain, but when I buy a bottle, the type of wine wouldn't be a Rioja would it? I'm confused. I know there are the three sub regions in Rioja, but i can't seem to find the name of the grape. The reason I ask is because I am doing a design project for a winery and I want a wine from Spain, preferably from Barcelona or surronding area, if you have any suggestions. Thank you
Answer From Expert Roger Bohmrich MW

Rioja is a Spanish wine region and gives its name to the wine produced in a demarcated zone which meets certain production requirements. In this way, Rioja is no different from other controlled appellations of origin such as Chianti, Bordeaux and Champagne. These and other European wines are labeled with the regional name and not with the names of the grapes as is customary in the US, Australia, Chile and other New World areas.
Rioja is rather far from Barcelona, and you have many other choices by selecting a wine from Catalonia grown in much closer proximity to Barcelona. Look for wines labeled with denominations such as Catalunya, Priorat, or Penedes.
