Red Wines With Synthetic Corks

Is it necessary to store red wines with synthetic corks on their sides?
Answer From Expert Roger Bohmrich MW

This is a good question given the prevalence of synthetic corks, which mimic but do not duplicate the attributes of natural cork. First, in my experience synthetic corks are generally used with white, red and rose wines which are intended to be consumed within a fairly short period after release. Therefore, the question of long-term storage does not usually arise. I find it doubtful that synthetics would "dry out" as would natural cork if the liquid is not in contact with the cork. That is the reason bottles with (natural) cork closures are laid on their sides.
