I NEED INFO AND POSSIBLE VALUE ON SOME WINE I HAVE FOUND. RIOJA SANTIAGO YAGO SPANISH BURGUNDY 1957. ANY INFO WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
Answer From Expert Roger Bohmrich MW
There are various old vintages of Yago Spanish wines dating from the late 1950s to early 1960s currently on offer on eBay. It appears some are labeled "Burgundy" or "Chablis," a practice which was, unfortunately, rather common for many years. Of course, these particular examples have nothing whatsoever in common with the originals. Today, the French are rightly vigilant in protecting the names of their wines from fraudulent use elsewhere in the world. From the photos displayed online, these old Yago wines tend to be in unusual bottles, some with a square lower section, and they are wrapped in a sort of wicker netting. The prices being asked tend to be low, well below USD 100 per bottle. Even this might be too much as it is highly doubtful these old wines - including your 1957 - are drinkable, but the vintage date may interest someone for sentimental or historical reasons.
