Answer From Expert Roger Bohmrich MW
I gather you are inspired to learn about wine, and I fully understand how daunting the subject can be with thousands of wines to choose from! I would like to help you get started, but with the space limits in this forum, the task is challenging. Have you ever tasted wine and, if so, which type - and did you enjoy it? That's really where the process begins for everyone, unless you have the time and inclination to enroll in a wine class. Experimentation is the key to wine, so set a budget and go to a good retailer. If your aim is to pay no more than, say, $10 per bottle, there are plenty of good, enjoyable wines from many countries. Pick a white and red from different regions, see if you like them, and just keep sampling new wines until you've established some favorites. There are quite a few useful reference books, and among them I would recommend Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book, which is updated annually. It's full of helpful, easily digested information. Good luck with discovering the pleasures of wine!
