How To Host A Wine Tasting Festival?

I'm planning a wine tasting event to help raise money for a non-profit art gallery. What should I know (other then the obvious date) before contacting local wineries to participate? Do wineries charge to participate or is it all volunteer?

To make your event appealing to your target audience and to enhance the likelihood of securing donations, you will need to establish an interesting theme. This may involve finding two or three wineries who are willing to participate. Since they will view this type of event as a marketing opportunity, they will provide the wine samples. The same is true for a wholesaler with a portfolio of wineries, and this could be a good option as well. You may find it easier to have one wine sponsor (with many brands) rather than trying to coordinate activities with several sponsors. A very important first step, however, is to confirm the state and local regulations you will need to follow. Contacting the state alcohol beverage control agency directly, or perhaps looking over their website, may resolve this question. Sometimes, an event permit is required. You will also need to find out if you are permitted to stage the event at the gallery (if that's your preference) rather than on the premises of a hotel or restaurant with an alcoholic beverage license. If you're allowed to hold the tasting at the gallery, you'll also need to rent glassware and tubs to chill wine (don't forget ice), and set up the gallery in a suitable manner, possibly obtaining a hand-held microphone and speakers if the space is large. A successful event will hinge on a creative approach and, as always, careful attention to the many administrative details that go into this type of function. Good luck!
