Corkage Fee

Please apply your tipping answer re wine tipping to corkage fees. lf l bring a $200 bottle to a $15 corkage fee, what is the protocol? The service is the same. Joe Tsai
Answer From Expert Roger Bohmrich MW

This is trickier to answer, but my personal preference would be to consider the BYO bottle as a lost sale for the server since you would not be purchasing a wine from the list. Since you can't apply a tip to a theoretical bottle you might purchase, the only reasonable approach is to tip on the corkage fee at the very least since that is a known figure, and part of the total bill.
