is moscato a brand name or what is it?
Answer From Expert Roger Bohmrich MW
Moscato refers both to a grape and a type of wine, of which there are now numerous variations. Moscato is the Italian word for Muscat, a group of grape varieties associated with Mediterranean wines since ancient times. Moscato d'Asti - a controlled denomination from the town of Asti in Italy's Piedmont - is a light, perfumed, sweet white wine with low alcohol. With the sudden and explosive popularity of Moscato-style wine, particularly in the U.S., many variations of Moscato have been introduced from grapes grown in different countries. Large California wineries are leading the charge. All of these wines have some degree of sweetness, and some may be lightly tinted rather than white. If sales of Moscato continue to grow at a fast rate and reach very high volume, we may come to the point that "moscato" becomes a brand unto itself.
