I would like to gift some AZ wine to a friend on the East Coast. What would be some of the best quality Reds & by which producers/labels?
Answer From Expert Roger Bohmrich MW
I am far from an expert on Arizona wines, although I have tried to learn more about what I think is a very promising wine region - and not at all what most people might expect. I attended a fascinating educational seminar and tasting not long ago and my eyes were opened by the quality and distinctive personalities of the Arizona wines presented. I also discovered that some of the most interesting wines are being made from grape varieties such as Viognier for whites and Syrah, Mourvedre, Petite Sirah and Sangiovese for reds - or creative blends in many cases. I am reluctant to make specific recommendations since I am sure I will leave out many worthwhile examples, so perhaps your best route would be to look over wines which won medals at the 2015 Arizona Republic wine competition (azcentral.com). Here are just a few reds you might want to seek out: Arizona Stronghold Syrah Clone 383, Callaghan Vineyards Tannat, Dos Cabezas WineWorks Red, Flying Leap Vineyards Grenache FLV-Block 1, Gallifant Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, Rune Classic Syrah, Javelina Leap Vineyards & Winery Cabernet Franc, and Zarpara Vineyard Syrah. Don't overlook the many blended reds as they make a strong case for Arizona. I have left off vintages as this list is intended as a starting place; the most talented wineries tend to excel across vintage years. I'm sure the recipient of your gift will, if they are open minded, be both pleased and surprised!
