I was recently in Palm Beach and purchased the above bottle of wine. It is absolutley delicious. Does anyone know a wine agent in Canada that carries this wine?
Answer From Expert Roger Bohmrich MW
I searched for this specific wine to find listings in Canada without success, but it may still be worth looking further in your locality. Even if you can't find this exact product, I would highly recommend you try other examples of the Mencia grape. Tempranillo and Garnacha are well-known red varieties hailing from Spain which are found in numerous districts. Mencia, on the other hand, is certainly not as famous or widely planted, but some versions have terrific intensity and fruit, often enhanced by wood aging as in your "roble" 2009. It would be well worth trying other reds from Bierzo, in what is called Green Spain, its northwestern section. The wines have an intriguing, indeed unique profile combining red fruits and herbal notes along with a dry, firm backbone. They call out for meats such as rack of lamb and bone-in pork roasts with garlic and root vegetables.
