Marilisa Allegrini is a magnetic person – equally knowledgeable and charming, and probably the Veneto’s greatest wine ambassador. Marilisa is President of Amarone Families (Famiglie dell’Amarone d’Arte), and in 2017 was honored to be the first Italian woman to grace the cover of Wine Spectator. As CEO of Allegrini Estates, she shares ownership with brother, Franco, Head Winemaker. They carry on the legacy of their father Giovanni, a visionary viticulturist in Valpolicella credited with revolutionizing Amarone and appassimento winemaking, and pioneering single-vineyard sites. “The beauty that surrounds us still surprises me,” she says. We’ll explore the Veneto with Marilisa and three of her family’s wines: Palazzo della Torre, “baby Amarone” made with 30% appassimento (dried) grapes; La Grola, a single-vineyard of the native Corvina from 40 year old vines; and Allegrini Amarone, the benchmark for modern Amarone.
