We have been very fortunate, here at Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant, to have visited many of the world’s great wine regions: large and small, old and new. Rarely has the welcome been as warm and genuine as in Portugal. We are not alone in this experience, as Portugal’s ranking as a favorite tourist destination amply demonstrates.

It is therefore with enormous pleasure that we welcome the lovely and talented Sandra Tavares da Silva to our Wine Bar. Sandra brings a bonus with her as well, considering she is the enologist for not one, but two wineries. Quinta da Cholcopalha was established by her parents, Alice and Paulo Tavares da Silva, in the Alenquer appellation to the northwest of Lisbon in 1980. Vineyards on this estate were first planted in the mid 1800s but required complete restoration when they purchased the property.

Sandra is also a partner with her husband, Jorge Serôdio Borges, in Wine & Soul, their winery in the rugged and remote Douro Valley. The heart of Wine & Soul is the historic Quinta da Manoella, purchased by Jorge’s great-great-grandfather after the phylloxera disaster destroyed most of Europe’s vineyards in the late 1800s. To describe this investment as a leap of faith given the conditions at the time would be a colossal understatement.
