Winemaker, Vintner, Steward, Matriarch Julie Johnson has a colorful journey in Napa Valley filled with many 'firsts', awards and sought after wines. She founded Frog’s Leap Winery in 1981 (with her first husband, John Williams and partner, Larry Turley). In 1990 she joined with Michaela Rodeno, (previous CEO at St. Supery Winery), and founded “Women for Wine Sense", a vital national organization whose “vision is to support the appreciation for and responsible consumption of wine”.
Julie started Tres Sabores in 1999 as a single vineyard estate and soon began making her own wine from the heritage Zinfandel growing right outside her front door. Her estate Zinfandel (which we’ll be tasting!) is officially registered as a “historic vineyard” at 50 years old and is the longest standing CCOF property in the region.
Julie speaks and participates in seminars and tastings on the subjects of Women in Wine and Regenerative Farming. She is on the Boards of the Wild Farm Alliance and Napa Valley State Parks Association. She is an active member of Napa Green, the Napa Vintners, Grape Growers, ZAP, and the Rutherford Dust Society.
At the end of the day, she sleeps best if she feels that she has been a thoughtful and energetic steward of the land and has capped off the day with a good glass of wine!
Join us for a special tasting of Tres Sabores a woman-owned, small production, family winery, that believes that every stage of the winemaking process is an opportunity for artistry, from the earth to the vine to the glass.
Taste the essence of Tres Sabores as Julie takes you on a journey through 6 of her sought after wines complete with stories, insider information and Q&A.
THE TASTING LINEUP
2024 Rose ($35)
Production: 625 cases
Intriguing and refreshingly delicious, ‘direct to press’ blend of dry farmed Zinfandel (estate) and Petite Sirah (Guarino Vineyard) Napa Valley. Fresh strawberry aromas and playful tastes of peach and watermelon abound in this delightful ‘sprite’.
2024 Picpoul Blanc ($40)
Production: 378 cases
A Rhone rarity grown in ancient sandy soils at a 2,000 ft elevation. Gracious aromatics: Asian Pear and Pippin apple, with just a touch of tropical flair. Those sensations lead to expectations of satin-like viscosity and pleasure in the glass.
2022 Zinfandel, Rutherford Estate ($58)
Production: only 17 barrels
Sumptuous berry-forward aromas and fruit-filled spicy, white pepper flavors offer up a classy ‘jazz club’ vibe. (Definitely not your uncle’s jam). We love making this elegantly balanced, complex, and pleasing wine from 'our front yard'.
2023 Barbera ($48)
Production: 318 cases
Vanilla at just the right level, medium tannin, ripe plums and strawberries, wild berries on farmer’s fence, a hint of bay and cedar. Mixed, dried herbs add to its lovely complexity. It’s smooth and tasty and here’s the heart of the wine: it’s savory.
2022 ¿Por qué no? ($42)
Production: 1200 cases
It's an original, it's a party, it's a delightfully smooth blend that needs no special occasion to open and enjoy anytime--with anyone! An original blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot.
BONUS WINE
2021 Petite Sirah ($54)
Production: 280 cases
Abundant Marion berry, cedar, and roasty-chocolate notes infuse this wine from start to finish. It's our most rambunctious wine-perfect for a BBQ feast, roast lamb with mole, or just for sipping by a fire with your slippers on.
