Slovenia is right next to Austria, Italy, Hungary, Croatia — what a wine tour! Most Slovenian wine production falls under the classification of premium. Viticulture and winemaking has existed in this region since the time of the Celt and Illyrian tribes, long before the Romans introduced winemaking to France, Spain and Germany. A 2016 DNA study showed that two red grape varietals, Blaufränkisch and Blauer Portugieser, originated in Slovenia.
