The Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo estate harbours one of the oldest wineries in the Douro Demarcated Region. The two buildings were erected in 1764 on different levels and still maintain their original design, with schist walls and tall, wide wooden doors, through which 550-litre Port wine barrels used to pass.

Since 1999 the estate has been owned by the Amorim family. Now in its fourth generation, the Amorim family has been linked to the wine trade since 1870, through its first trading activity - producing cork stoppers for the Port Wine Cellars, in Vila Nova de Gaia. The estate is now managed by Luisa Amorim, who has significantly augmented the family's wine business. With deep cultural awareness, the wines have ancestral roots in Portugal’s finest wine regions, including unique places such as the Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo in the Douro and the Quinta da Taboadella in the Dão region.

Inspired by the morphology of the Douro river and the natural layout of the terraced vineyards, the winery features a unique installation in the world, built in cement that reflects the landscape of the Douro wine region. There are a total of 32 cement tanks of different sizes, installed on two levels. There are also two traditional granite grape presses, with three centuries of history, which have been restored. As a result of this new investment, it is now possible to ascertain the optimal moment of ripening of the grapes and increase micro-oxygenisation in the different various elements, obtaining more elegant wines that are less marked by the wood, and thereby extract the full potential of the estate’s 41 vineyard plots.

The first study of monovarietal planting in the Douro region occurred in the Quinta Nova estate, between 1979 and 1981, in conjunction with the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture, via the Douro Centre for Viticultural Studies. The study began with Touriga Nacional, then Tinta Roriz, and finally with Touriga Franca.

Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo is the first wine estate in the Douro to open wine tourism facilities, and is one of the most highly-rated wine tourism spots in Portugal which is part of Relais & Chateaux.
