On the evening of November 8th, please join us at the Hilton Harrisburg for an exploration of Malbec. Malbec is a rich, full-bodied red wine, so dark it’s sometimes called the black wine, with fruity notes and robust tannins. This is a great wine for true red wine lovers; particularly when paired with food, as we will do. The Malbecs we will enjoy will be accompanied by small plates prepared by the Hilton chefs to complement the wines.
While we now associate Malbec with Argentina, Malbec originated in the southwest of France, particularly in the Cahors region, over 2,000 years ago. It was (and still is) an authorized grape for Bordeaux wines. Unfortunately, the Malbec grape has poor resistance to weather, disease, and pests so was catastrophically hit in France first by the phylloxera epidemic in the late 19th century and then the Great Frost of 1956. After this double whammy over the course of about half a century, Bordeaux producers shifted away from Malbec to more reliable Merlot and Cabernet grapes. Fortunately for Malbec and for us, it experienced a remarkable resurgence when it was introduced to Argentina. The high-altitude vineyards of Mendoza provided an ideal environment for the grape, allowing it to thrive and develop its characteristic deep color, robust tannins, and fruity flavors. Today, Malbec is celebrated as Argentina’s flagship varietal and is enjoyed worldwide for its bold, distinctive profile. It also remains the most important grape in the Cahors region of France with wines seeking the Cahors AOC designation required to be at least 70% Malbec.
As with all wines, Malbec expresses different characteristics depending on the terroir. Argentinean Malbecs will typically display dark berry and plum flavors with softer tannins and higher acidity than Malbecs from other regions. Cahors Malbecs are more likely to show tart red berry and black pepper or spicy attributes with more robust tannins. Chilean Malbecs seem to fall somewhere between these two.
While the exact wines for the event are still being winnowed down, we will taste Malbecs from Argentina, France, and Chile; and potentially others. We may even throw in a Malbec blend for comparison. If you want to learn more about Malbec and what it offers, join us on November 8th!
Registration deadline is Tuesday, November 5th. Please send any food allergies info via email to the Treasurer.
