The wines that fueled our independence!

Madeira was the most popular wine of Colonial America, and was a regular staple in homes and taverns for centuries. The wines are virtually indestructible, made on the island of Madeira off the coast of Portugal. Historically, the wine was fortifed with brandy to help it survive the ravages of the long transatlantic crossing, where it was literally baked in the hulls of the sailing vessels of the day. Today the wine is again fortified, and aged in oak casks in warehouse size ovens called estufas, largely to duplicate the effects of a transatlantic crossing. Known for their richness and complexity, the wines are seemingly ageless. Along with the wines, we will enjoy a selection of artisanal breads and cheeses appropriate fro these luxurious wines.
