The Free Spirits is an improvisational comedy ensemble comprised of senior citizens who are members of Theater World at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute of UCSD. We range from 59-90 years of age. Although seniors can take classes in improv at several of the theatres in town, we are the only regularly performing group of senior improvisors!
Yes, and… we are immensely entertaining! In 2024, we were the 3-time winners of the Sunday Night Smack-Down competition at the Mockingbird Improv Theater in Liberty Station. We beat out three different groups of (much younger) competitors and earned ourselves a 5-week residency, where we continued to delight audiences with our long-form improv performances.
On April 5th we are looking forward to performing "short form" improv. While there will be different formats for about 2-dozen scenes, everything we do will be uniquely developed on the spot, since we will base the scenes on suggestions from the audience.
The Free Spirits aim to prove that imagination never grows old and that having fun is great for the body and soul. We hope you will join us on Saturday, April 5th from 6-8pm for our two 45-minute sets. We are sure that the audience will leave with a smile on their face and a laugh in their hearts.
