When people say “Creole” in St. Lucia, they don’t mean French-influenced. Saint Lucian Creole (Kwéyol) celebrates a diverse African heritage that influenced James Beard Award-winning chef Nina Compton’s culinary lens as she traveled and worked in restaurants abroad, including Compère Lapin, her flagship restaurant in New Orleans. Written with James Beard Award-winner, Osayi Endolyn, Compton’s debut cookbook Kwéyòl / Creole explores the cuisines and pivotal locales that form the basis of Compton’s unique culinary perspective—from her birthplace in St. Lucia to Jamaica where her view of Caribbean cuisines broadened, to Miami where she was immersed in Afro-Latin influences and honed her cooking style, to New Orleans, her adopted city where Creole cuisine brought her home in new ways.
Copies of Kwéyòl / Creole: Recipes, Stories, and Tings from a St. Lucian Chef’s Journey by Nina Compton with Osayi Endolyn are available for purchase with tickets and at the event from our friends at BEM | books & more.
