Join us as we taste a selection of Kanonkop Classic Estate wines under the guidance of Kanonkop Estates Export Director Heinrich Venter.

Kanonkop is a 4th generation family-owned wine estate, which has been handed down from generation to generation and is now in the hands of brothers Paul and Johann Krige.

Kanonkop Estate in Stellenbosch has been named 12th Most Admired Wine Brand in the World for 2024, in the annual poll done by leading wine publication Drinks International which every year selects its 50 top brands throughout the winemaking diaspora. Kanonkop is the only South African winery to appear on this year’s illustrious top-50 list, and was also named as best brand in all of Africa and the Middle East.

This Top 50 recognition comes one year after Kanonkop celebrated its 50th anniversary as a wine brand, its first bottlings – Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage – being from the 1973 vintage. In its half-century as arguably South Africa’s leading wine brand, Kanonkop has received various international accolades, including four times winning the trophy for Best Winemaker in the World at the International Wine and Spirits Competition.

This is a unique opportunity to taste a series of high quality South African wines. The wines on tasting will be accompanied by a tasting plate.

Please note, the tasting will either be “live”via ZOOM or in person if Heinrich has managed to get his visa.

Kanonkop wines for tasting

Kadette Cape Blend 2017

37% Pinotage, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc

A deep ruby red colour with notes of blackcurrant, ripe raspberries and mocha on the nose. A well balanced structure with fresh acidity and flavours of dark chocolate and blackberry fruit on the palate. The wine has a good length with a supple, dry finish

Kadette Pinotage 2016

A deep purple-red colour, with a bright rim. This Pinotage offers notes of raspberry, strawberry and black plum which is balanced by characteristics of sweet spice, vanilla and supple tannins.

Kadette Pinotage 2017

A complex, fruit forward wine with deep purple hues. Aromas of raspberry, strawberry and red cherries on the nose. The palate offers layers of red fruits, plums, red currants and chocolate flavours. Elegant tannin structure with a good length and dry finish.

Pinotage 2008

This is very good with bright floral, red plum/cherry fruit nicely framed by oak mocha and leathery notes. It's medium-full bodied, fairly tense and lively. Almost juicy; very engaging. And the length is excellent.

Pinotage 2016

Deep purple colour. Intense aromas of black plums, red and black berries, vanilla and aromatic sweet spices. This vintage offers good complexity with layered red and black fruit flavours which are balanced and accessible, but will continue to develop savoury notes with bottle age.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

A dense full bodied wine showing subtle notes of black current, black plum, cedar wood and spice which follows on to the palate. It is balanced with a good acidity and integrated ripe tannins, followed by a long finish.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Dark and brooding, with intricate aromas of oak spice, black berry coulis, graphite powder, tilled earth, wet tobacco and chai tea. The palate is luxurious and utterly elegant, with layered flavours of blackcurrants, morello cherries, crunchy raspberries and dark coffee beans, all of which are framed against a sturdy, yet delicate latticework of finely grained tannins. A wine filled with poise and precision, waiting to unleash the promise of this majestic vintage.

Paul Sauer 2016

62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc

Complex and layered aromas of cassis, plums and sweet spice are further complimented by notes of tobacco, cedar wood and cigar box on the nose. The palate has a plush, juicy red and black fruit core with seamless, integrated tannins and a fine seam of acidity. Pin-point balance between the new oak and fruit results in a wine with grace and elegance. Beautiful savoury notes on the finish.
