Join JBF Greens for a celebration of Khmer cuisine and culture at Sophon in Greenwood.
Chef Karuna Long was born in the Mount Baker neighborhood of Seattle to young parents who bravely escaped the horrors of the Khmer Rouge. Karuna’s father, Vichan, was a talented Cambodian musician and his mother, Sophon, was a skilled traditional Khmer Robam dancer and singer. After studying jazz at UCLA, Karuna spent time in hospitality in New York City and Los Angeles while pursuing his dreams of becoming a musician like his parents. In 2010, Karuna returned to Seattle to solidify his career in hospitality.
Open since February 2024, Sophon is a tribute to Karuna’s mother and to his culture. Named a James Beard Award semifinalist® in 2025, Sophon was also featured in Bon Appetit’s list of 20 Best New Restaurants of 2024 shortly after opening. For this occasion, chef Karuna will create a three-course family-style meal that illuminates his family’s story of resiliency.
