Local Event
Cost: $100 Registration fee, includes noshes & wine
On a winter Sunday, we will open our doors to a small group who with to jumpstart or refresh their writing. "I find I do more writing in the winter," says our instructor, Lilace Mellin Guignard. "The extra darkness and colder weather are conducive to hunkering down and diving inward."
A glass of wine and breaking bread with some like minded folks makes it even better.
INSTRUCTOR: Lilace taught poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania before becoming associate publisher of Mountain Home magazine, for which she also writes. Before moving to Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, she taught courses at the University of Nevada, Reno, and Warren Wilson College. She is the author of an adventure memoir, When Everything Beyond the Walls Is Wild: Being a Woman Outdoors in America (Texas A&M Press 2019) and a poetry chapbook Young at the Time of Letting Go (Evening Street Press 2016). Her poems have appeared in Poetry magazine, Ecotone, Calyx, and Northern Appalachia Review, to name a few. You can find her at tentofonesown.com.
WORKSHOP: How do we convey internal thoughts and feelings while following the age-old adage to (mostly) show, don’t tell? If the outer landscape is what we have in common, how do we use it to reveal what is going on inside? This workshop will present a more holistic way to approach the use of creative tools we have been taught are separate—simile, metaphor, sensory description, sound, rhythm, tone—so that we better understand how they work together to convey meaning in our fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.
This workshop is for all levels and all genres, and will include individual writing time, craft tips, handouts, discussion, and house made farm-to-table noshes with wine. Bring your favorite journal and pen, bring a cushion and blanket if you like to spread out on the floor. Most of all, bring a willingness to let go of judgment, explore, and create.
FOOD & WINE: A meal of house-made soups, salad, bread, and cookies will be served at the conclusion of the workshop. A Hunt Country glass of wine of your choosing will also be included. Additional wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages will also be available for purchase. We can accomodate most food restrictions.
