A brief history of tradition of the Feast of the Seven Fishes:
La Vigilia (The Feast of the Seven Fishes) tradition originated in the Southern regions of Italy. The area has a large Roman Catholic population, and the festivity developed in honor of the midnight birth of Jesus Christ. In anticipation of His arrival, many Italians celebrate over an evening of fare and fellowship. Due to its bountiful coastline, Italian cuisine has a rich history of incorporating seafood as the predominant protein.
It is also custom for many Christians and Catholics to abstain from eating meat on Fridays and Holy Days. There are specifically "seven fishes" because of the number seven's significance appearing throughout the Bible.
