If you haven't yet discovered the wines of Mt. Etna, now is your chance. And if you do know these elegant, layered, minerally, yet refreshing wines, you'll want the chance to taste them again.
Guided by longtime member and wine store proprietor, Joel Mitchel, we will be tasting four white wines and seven red wines. The whites are 100% Carricante or blends of Carricante and Catarrato Bianco. One will come from a single site (contrada), and one will be from the joint venture between Alberto Graci and Angelo Gaja (one of the biggest names in Italian wine, IYKYK).
Looking for powerful Ribera del Duero-like reds? These are NOT them. These Mt. Etna reds pack plenty of flavor yet feature greater elegance and finesse. The dominant grapes used in these red wines are Nerello Mascalese (minimum 80%) and Nerello Mantellato (also called Nerello Cappuccio). Among the seven red wines we'll be tasting, there will be two single-contrada wines, one from the Graci/Gaja joint venture, and one unique wine from a unique grape.
It should be a tasty learning experience, and one we hope will stimulate you to explore other examples of all that Mt. Etna has to offer.
