As fall keeps on coming and the holiday season begins to be visible over the horizon, you'll be wanting a good supply of delicious, interesting and well-priced wines on hand at all times to share at planned parties and unexpected get togethers. Here are five favorites for the season and you:
Maison Alain De la Treille Chardonnay 2023 - Always one of our favorite bargain French whites, this all-steel Chardonnay is crisp, dry and nicely fruited. Terrific party white.
Dom Vincent Siret-Courtaud Quincy 2023 - About halfway between Tours and Sancerre on the Cher River, Quincy delivers Sauvignon Blanc with a bit of Sancerre minerality and a nice level of Tourraine fruit and cut.
Manuel Formigo Ribeiro Formigo Blanco 2023 – From further inland in Galicia, this drinks a bit like Rias Baixas Albarino with pretty stone fruit at the core and plenty of salty minerality.
Massimiliano Calabretta Vino Rosso Gaio Gaio 2021 - We love Mt Etna reds, and this one is deliciously drinkable and a great value, too, whether enjoyed at "normal" temperatures or with a refreshing chill.
Dom Clef de St Thomas Chateauneuf du Pape Pierre Troupel 2022 - Calling this "easy drinking Chateauneuf" under-sells the quality and complexity a bit, but isn't too far off the mark! Fine value, too.
All the wines will be even better when enjoyed with this week's featured cheese: Cave Aged Gruyere. A classic Swiss cow's milk cheese turns more firm, assertively flavored and nutty when aged extra long in cool, humid, caves. It's a delicious snacking and party tray cheese, makes for a very elevated grilled cheese sandwich, and is the perfect topping to warming bowl of onion soup.
