The single most exciting development in the wine world during the past 20 years is the rising availability of great wine grape varieties that were formerly limited to local consumption by the fickle fate of commerce or constrained by antiquated production techniques.  For example, Cabernet Sauvignon’s world-wide fame is partially explained by being spread across the world by English and French colonialism and trade, whereas Mencía was landlocked in a few isolated hamlets in Spain, where it was vinified predominantly for family consumption by people speaking Galego rather than Spanish. That’s hardly the grape’s fault, but Mencía’s greatness could only be discovered after modern technology and skilled winemakers could prove its potential. This isn’t an isolated case, but rather an example of a phenomenon also witnessed in numerous remote locations in Italy, Portugal, Greece, the Balkans, Eastern Europe and beyond. We’ll “blind taste” a dozen of the most striking examples of this breed in a session full of surprises and adventure

Wine samples available for pickup by appointment on Friday, October 16 between 12pm – 5pm.
