Riesling is commonly misunderstood to be fruit-driven wine. It is not. It is a mineral-driven wine.

Because Riesling is so sensitive to minute variations of soil type, its producers tend to offer multiple bottlings to express this lovely facet. This can cause dismay among people who prefer things to be tidy. Nature is never tidy. Riesling invites us to celebrate the detail and diversity of which wine is capable.

Riesling ripens late. The “ideal” is 110 days from flowering to harvesting. In typical years, Riesling is gaining sugar during cool Autumn days, but not losing acidity in crisp Autumn nights. (Acidity drops at night, not during the day.) Thus Riesling can be ripe while retaining a vivid freshness.

Riesling is the audiobook of the soil it grows in. The best examples seem to digitally read your palate. If you accustom yourself to Riesling, it will spoil you for wines less pixilated and nuanced - which is to say, most other wines.

Riesling's lack of broad market demand is the result of its finesse and refinement. It is not the summer-blockbuster movie. It is the little art house film attended by a small but devoted audience of film nerds. Riesling, in short, has the audience it deserves and which is worthy of its gifts.

Join Terry Theise, award-winning author & renowned importer of Grower Champagne, German and Austrian producers as he takes us on an incredible wine journey.
