To this day, the 18th amendment, which ushered in the era known as Prohibition, remains the only U.S. constitutional amendment to have ever been repealed. Loopholes and laws surrounding the forbidden sale of alcohol during that nearly 14-year period led to a series of unintended consequences, from organized crime to the organization of women that sparked the suffrage movement. In this hybrid in-person and online class, Certified Specialist of Wine Matilda Parente, MD, will lead you through the events that led to Prohibition, its costs to the wine industry and the nation and its 1933 repeal. You will be challenged to consider whether current emerging anti-alcohol messaging, including those tied to health and from global bodies and regulators in some countries, represent a growing neo-Prohibitionist threat and how the century-old conflict between “wets” and “drys” are mirrored in today’s polarized sociopolitical landscape.
